PhD Supervision Research Interests
The retail team at the School of Management, University of Surrey has a diverse range of topics suitable for PhD supervision and on which they invite contact from prospective students. Candidates interested in pursuing any of the topics are urged to discuss their interest with the respective academic.
Andrew Alexander's (a.alexander@surrey.ac.uk) research interests include:

- The marketing and management of town shopping centres
- Town Centre Management
Alan Hallsworth’s (a.hallsworth@surrey.ac.uk) research interests include:
- Long term retail change in the UK and the influence of Government policy
- Small shop survival and changing sources of supply
- Grocery e-retailing
- Contrasting retail developments in Canada and the UK
Michelle Lowe's (m.lowe@surrey.ac.uk) research focuses on:
- Issues of retail-led urban regeneration
- Managing growth - retail development
- Housing growth and sustainable communities
- Customer service and competitive advantage in retail
- Landscapes of consumption
Hayley Myers' (h.myers@surrey.ac.uk) research interests include:
- International retailing - with a particular focus on Europe
- Retail property - with a particular focus on Uk and European shopping centre development
- Consumer change and implications for retail - with a particular focus on the aging poulation
Anna Watson's (anna.watson@surrey.ac.uk) research interests are principally in the area of franchising.
Within this she has a particular focus on:
- Intellectual capital acquisition and knowledge management in franchise organisations
- The impact of franchising on small business growth
- Applications of IT for franchise systems
Additionally she has research interests in e-commerce and corporate social responsibility, and in particular the impact of environmental and ethical concerns on the retail buying process.
