Student Experience

Management Information Systems programme

The first current postgraduate MIS students who started their programme in September 2006, talk about their experiences on the programme so far.

Laura Watler

“I first undertook my Undergraduate studies here at Surrey in Computing and Information Technology. I found Surrey to be a very exciting university with a good learning environment. During my last year I was interested in several Masters Degrees offered by University of Surrey. I settled on Management Information Systems because when I read about it, it sounded like something that would suit my career goals. It is a great mixture of business and IT, learning to work with both sides and how to mediate between them.

The core lectures for MIS are not too full, allowing you to get to know your lecturers on a more one to one basis. The lecturers encourage you and check to make sure you are on track in the assignments. Lectures and labs are set at our pace and if you do have questions or problems understanding the lecturers are very willing to help, something I find very helpful.”

Lan Lan Zhai

“I am happy I chose this masters because it is exactly what I wanted; a more business degree while not letting go of the IT skills I learned as an Undergraduate.

My three major interests are Computing, Tourism, and Music. I have been playing the piano for at least 15 years, but rather than becoming a musician, I would prefer to start my career in Computing or Tourism.

When I was a child, the toys that surrounded me were mostly mechanical and digital. Also, my father runs a business successfully that sells mechanical and digital items. I have gained a vast amount of knowledge on electronics from my father and I have great ambitions in the electronic and digital area; I would very much like to follow in his footsteps.

I undertook my undergraduate degree in Tourism; this three-year experience made me understand the importance of e-Tourism. As I did not undertake an e-business course when I was an undergraduate, I decided to do a higher degree in information systems management. My family is giving me full support to finish the master degree in Management Information Systems.

Ultimately, I would like to contribute to the e-tourism area, and pursue my career in e-Business.”
