What is AACSB Accreditation?
Back to questions listAACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business
AACSB International was founded in 1916 and began its accreditation function
with the adoption of the first standards in 1919. Additional standards for
programs in accountancy were adopted in 1980. AACSB International members
approved mission-linked accreditation standards and the peer review process
in 1991. In 2003, members approved a revised set of standards that are relevant
and applicable to all business programs globally and which support and encourage
excellence in management education worldwide.
Accreditation is a process of voluntary, non-governmental review of educational
institutions and programs. Institutional accreditation reviews entire colleges
and universities. Specialized agencies award accreditation for professional
programs and academic units in particular fields of study. As a specialized
agency, AACSB International grants accreditation for undergraduate and graduate
business administration and accounting programs.
AACSB International accreditation represents the highest standard of achievement
for business schools, worldwide. Institutions that earn accreditation confirm
their commitment to quality and continuous improvement through a rigorous
and comprehensive peer review. AACSB International accreditation is the hallmark
of excellence in management education.
AACSB International accreditation assures stakeholders that business schools:
- Manage resources to achieve a vibrant and relevant mission.
- Advance business and management knowledge through faculty scholarship.
- Provide high-calibre teaching of quality and current curricula.
- Cultivate meaningful interaction between students and a qualified faculty.
- Produce graduates who have achieved specified learning goals.
What is AMBA Accreditation?
Back to questions listSurrey MBA Awarded AMBA Accreditation – Unique Triple Accreditation is a World First
The University of Surrey's School of Management recently received confirmation of the accreditation of its MBA programmes by the Association of MBAs (AMBA). This followed a lengthy review and self-assessment process, culminating in a rigorous on-site evaluation from an AMBA review panel. In its final assessment report, the AMBA panel concluded that "the Surrey MBA is a well-designed, rigorous programme of study, which embraces a range of relevant theory firmly linked to the practical world of leadership, business and management".
Furthermore, the panel noted the curriculum has been designed to "benefit from input by MBA faculty clearly derived from, and illuminated by their extensive links as consultants and researchers with contemporary business and industry". The review panel also commended the School of Management on its overall committed and effective leadership and direction, the general infrastructure which is attractive and of high quality providing an excellent student environment and the high quality of its current students. Alongside the generic MBA are a set of more specialised MBA pathways in Hospitality, Tourism and Retail each drawing on the School’s world-renowned strengths in these areas.
The AMBA accreditation has confirmed the quality and standing of the Surrey MBA. Furthermore, the School of Management has also achieved accreditation from the prestigious American Association to Advance Collegiate School of Business (AACSB) and has more recently received renewal of an earlier accreditation specifically for its Tourism courses from the World Tourism Organisation, a specialised agency of the United Nations Organisation. These three accreditations make the School of Management unique as no other business school in the world holds these simultaneously.
In reaction to the AMBA news, the Head of the School of Management Professor Bob O’Keefe said: "We are delighted to have received these accreditations which have been awarded in recognition of the high standards of our programmes, and the hard work that both staff and students put into getting the most out of working and studying at Surrey".
